What does, “I’m a martial artist, ” really mean?

I’m a martial artist er or should I say, I study martial arts. Well actually I study a style of martial arts and some other martial arts but not all martial arts. Maybe I should just say I study karate, which a Japanese form of martial arts. Well actually, I primarily study karate but when I have time, I also study joint manipulation, some grappling, and I’ve recently become impressed with Savat. I also carry a pocketknife that I know a few basic techniques for and on occasion, I go to the range and kill a few paper targets. Those are all martial arts. Oh, and did I mention I have a cross bow too, well it’s more like a practice one, I might be able to take down a rabbit with it but that’s about it. I guess all in all, I definitely have some martial arts tendencies.

No that you are scratching your head, it might help if I define what martial arts is. According to the American Heritage Dictionary, martial arts is a noun that is defined as:

noun

  1. Any of various arts of self-defense, such as aikido, karate, judo, or tae kwon do, usually practiced as sport.
  2. Commonly, any of several fighting styles which contain systematized methods of training for combat, both armed and unarmed; often practiced as a sport, e.g. boxingkaratejudo, Silat, wrestling, or Muay Thai.
  3. military skills, proficiency in military strategy, prowess in warfare

I know many people who are martial artists and don’t even know it. Reeling this back in, I study formal self-defense styles of martial arts. My primary style that I have been continuously practiced is Uechi-Ryu Karate Do. Uechi-Ryu is a traditional Okinawan style of karate. It was brought to Okinawa by Uechi Kanbun a long time ago from China. If you want to learn more about it, google it, there are hundreds of pages about it. I am not a master, I don’t compete in tournaments, I can’t rub my hands together and fix sore shoulders. I just do it because it’s great exercise, there are many practical self-defense applications, and I have met many great people along this journey.

One thing I have heard many times from people is, I used to study martial arts as a kid and I would love to do it again. My question is, why don’t you. My teacher is 80-somthing years old and still teaches and practices martial arts. If he can do it, so can anyone else. If you have a desire to learn something new, not just martial arts, I say get going and get started. You may find that you don’t like it or you may end up doing it for the rest of your life. Either way, you learned something new.

These sensors involving some cameras change in in the area of contrast, while others use a beam involving infra-red (IR) light, especially in low lighting. Higher specification cameras at times use a combination of both models and will often have Face Priority AF where the photographic camera can ‘See’ the face and concentrate only on that. Thanks for sharing your opinions on this blog.
